WHAT IS THE ABBEY CENTRE?

South Northampton is the scene of major expansion! Twenty years ago when South Northampton was set to expand its population, it became apparent that there would also be a severe cut-back in the provision of public amenities out of the public purse. So the small group of people who comprised the Baptist Church in South Northampton took the initiative and, in 1983, launched The Abbey Centre Appeal. In 1987, The Abbey Centre, a multi-purpose building for community use, was opened, plus an outside sports area and associated parking.

The Abbey Centre has been readily available for use by all people of goodwill irrespective of age, creed, or any other unnecessary discrimination. The need for this provision has been shown by its full and constant use.

Between 1981 and 2000, South Northampton grew from 7,000 people to 30,000+.

In order to ensure maximum community participation, all users of The Abbey Centre are invited to be members of The Abbey Centre Users' Association. Representatives from all user groups are required at User Association meetings when there is a chance, both formally and informally, to help determine the running and use of The Abbey Centre. All individual users are also invited to attend, plus other people who have the goodwill of the local community at heart. Two Borough Councillor representatives attend as of right under the constitution.
